Manitoba's Woman Entrepreneur of the Year
The Woman Entrepreneur of Year Awards are presented each year to a woman entrepreneur who has displayed vision, foresight and determination in growing her business. The event is hosted by the Woman Business Owners of Manitoba.
The first award was presented in 1992, and has grown each year and now includes several categories of winners recognising entrepreneurial excellence in a select number of business classes.
“The awards evening is an opportunity to recognise today’s pacesetters who, in turn, will stand as inspiring role models for tomorrow's emerging business leaders,” says the Awards organizer.
“As a new business I had never even considered that I might be doing something award-worthy. I was just determined to execute my business plan and keep the business growing. When I first received the letter letting me know I had been nominated, I didn’t open it for a few weeks because I thought it was just advertising! I nearly fell on the floor when I finally did open it to see it’s real contents,” Alex recounts.
“And then to become a finalist from the 64 (I think) nominees was yet another honour. I was in rarefied company! Winning was never a consideration for me, there were just so many amazing women in the lineup, so when my name was announced I was sure it was a mistake!.”
The award validates the xLAB business concept which is really still a few years ahead of it’s time here in Manitoba. It’s only the innovators and early adopters that “get it” right now. But the idea of building a business on the Internet with online marketing as the INITIAL step in creating a website is gaining traction as evidenced by the Judges' acknowledgement of this emerging Manitoba business.
