If you want an easy way to understand how to get on the first pages of the search engines, all you have to do is understand how people win American Idol.  Just like American Idol, getting on the first page of Google and the other search engines is a competition!

Let's look at the steps in  more detail.

STEP 1

American Idol: You have to have some basic...

American Idol: You have to have some basic talent just to get in the door.

Search Engines: Your website must have some basic requirements just to get the search engines to come and take a look.

STEP 2

American Idol: You have to have a unique act, or present your talent in an unusual way.

Search Engines:  Your website content must be unique and you have to present your information in an engaging way.

STEP 3

American Idol: You have to appeal to Simon. Randy and Paula will fall in line with Simon.

Search Engines: You have to appeal to the Google bot. Bing and Yahoo will usually fall in line with Google.

STEP 4

American Idol: You have to get millions of people to vote for you.

Search Engines: YOu have to get hundreds of people to vote for you, by linking to your website.  Each link is a vote of confidence that the search engines interpret as being a referral for your site.

The more authority the referring site has, the greater the vote of confidence and the grater the value of that link.
