You’ve got your visitors to your site, now how to you ensure they buy from you to make more sales. This overall process is called conversion – converting your traffic from a visitor to a customer.

The art and science of making sales is often the missing link in many business websites. Consider that the average conversion rate is 1% and you immediately understand why doing all you can do to convert your visitors is a crucial component in your online success.

There are many ways to improve your online conversion rates to make sales, from things as complex as AB Split Testing and customized landing pages, to simpler things like writing your text to follow a psychological and logical flow to funnel visitors to the next step.

One of our clients uses a great example of the Olive Garden as an analogy to describe this selling/buying process.

When you go to the Olive Garden for dinner, you’re greeted by a host, who asked how many in your party, and then seats you at table. S/he will then ask if you’d like start off with something to drink, and perhaps some appetizers. Then your server comes to take your order, and once you’re finished your main course, they will ask if you’re ready for coffee and desert.

What has all this got to do with your sales and conversions? It’s the same logical process – how would you feel if you walked into the restaurant and the host asked you if you’d like some desert? It wouldn’t work. You’re not ready for desert! Just like the serving staff at the Olive Garden, you have to start the process at the beginning, and lead you visitors through the process to it’s logical conclusion.

Just like this example, you customers aren’t ready to BUY unless you’ve walked them through the logical and psychological process first.
