Become Visible on the Internet

To become visible on the Internet is not guaranteed; there’s no guarantee people will visit your site - it’s not a matter of “build it and they will come.” In fact the majority of Websites receive less than 20 page views each day, Chuck Lawson research statistics as of November, 2004 for a typical site, found that it got 774 page views (not visitors)each month, that’s about 26 per day. Of those 774, 92 were from “robots” - automated processes run by search engines to update their index, and by spammers looking for e-mail addresses (which is why you never put a “live” e-mail address on a web site). Of the remaining 682 page views, 119 belonged to the site owner. That leaves 563, or fewer than 19 a day. Hardly enough to pay for annual hosting! To make your site pay you’ll need a minimum of 100 visitors each day.

(The number of pages one visitor clicks on are your page views, so you can see that page views are generally a lot higher than the number of visitors. The minimum number of unique visitors per day is 100 – that should be your initial short term goal depending on the popularity and competitiveness of your niche)

And it’s all a matter of visibility – having lots of eager visitors able to easily find your site. Most visitors find sites by searching on Google, Yahoo or MSN, but they can also find links on other highly visited Websites, from referrals in forums and newsgroups; from e-mails, and even paid advertising if your business model is amenable to this.

But to be visible on the Internet, you’ll have to make sure people can find you in all of these ways. Simply building your Website, and putting it up on a server will only guarantee the only web you’ll experience will be cobwebs!
